No Resolutions: Setting Goals and Making 2016 My Best YEAR Yet

Do a quick mental evaluation of 2015. Did you make resolutions? Did you stick to them? If you didn’t stick to them, why not?  I’m sure it’s probably because you chose something super generic that wasn’t really ambitious or satisfying to you. And this is the reason I stopped making resolutions. I was just setting generic resolutions like I’m going to stop cursing or I’m going to lose 20 lbs. I had nothing to back my resolutions…ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! No action plans just a couple of sentences and then I went into the New Year. 21 days later do you think I remembered my resolutions, BARELY!! So now I set goals. Why? Because goals have action plans and are measurable and ambitious. The other good thing about goals they can be adjusted and carried over to the next year if needed because let’s face it, Life happens. So do me a favor, stop making resolutions and let’s make goals.

I’m not here to tell you what to do but I’m here to help you figure out a course of action that will help you make 2016 the best year you have ever had! And the best way to accomplish this is to set clear goals with action plans. Let me give you little disclaimer: I know you’ve seen every headline imaginable about how to make 2016 your best year yet, but this time, it’s totally different. I’m giving you some really good stuff here.

I love to set goals and I also like daily To-Do lists. It keeps me focused and productive. I get off track very very easily. I went a whole year without an actual physical planner. I need the paper, my phone gets ignored, but if you are a technology savvy individual, this list will work for you too!

In order to set goals effectively and to stay on course you will need a few items to keep you focused. Again I like paper, I have to write for it to stick so many of these items may not work for the technology savvy.

Here’s Jocey’s complete list to make 2016 your best year yet!

Quiet Location

This can be your favorite reading spot, your bed, desk, the kitchen table but it has to be somewhere where you can sit + think. If you are saying I don’t have a quiet place, I have children, a husband, a dog and the list goes on, it’s okay! Find quiet time instead, this may be in the hour before the kids wake up in the morning or after the kids go to bed, maybe even on your lunch break, but find a moment where you can take time to think of your goals and your action plan to fulfill your goals. Also use this quiet spot for daily meditation. In order to make the next 366 days your best days yet you have, it is a MUST to take time for yourself (we’ll talk about the importance of this in a later post. I like to start my mornings by reading scripture and meditating. You would be so surprised how this tremendously effects your day.

Goal Setting Journal

Make sure this journal is something you actually want to pick up and something that sticks out to you. So if composition books make you cringe don’t grab it. Here’s my goal setting journal.

It’s by Myliek Teele, CEO and Founder of curlBox. This is actually my second journal that I have purchased from her. In this journal I have written out my goals for 2016 and for January. I have my actionable steps included as well. Making sure I’m able to put action behind my goals really helps me stick with them. I like to stay accountable.

A brief word on accountability. Accountability helps you stay focused, it doesn’t leave room for excuses. Excuses are the absolute worst. Just be honest with yourself and everyone around you. Some people may not be able to handle your honesty at first shot but I promise you they will appreciate it later. If you can’t get an assignment done, don’t make an excuse just advise your boss, you didn’t finish and you need a little more time, tell them why you weren’t able to finish, give them a firm deadline (accountability) that it will be completed. Let’s go into 2016 accountable with no more excuses.

Planner/Calendar

I like planners, they help me with my daily to do lists and I can input important dates and reminders so I can stay on track. You may like to just use your phone and that’s cool too. I use my phone, for certain events but you can believe it’s all in my planner as well. I chose a smaller planner for 2016 than I normally carry but it’s also a cute planner, I grabbed it at my local Wal-Mart.

If you are a super organized mom and your children have a million and one things to do all the time, I suggest a family binder as well. This helps you keep up with meal planning, grocery lists, coupons, appointments, etc.

I’m sure you thought this list was going to be super extensive but I’m such a minimalist in certain areas of life. But really this is all you need to make sure your 2016 is the best. Along the way make sure you are celebrating yourself while you make your goals. Even if it’s a simple visit to Starbucks!

Set goals, stay organized, live life and most importantly ENJOY 2016!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
